Teaching Your Dog to Settle on a Mat

Teaching your dog to lie down and relax on their own mat gives them something calm to do instead of pacing.

Is this right for your dog?

Good for most dogs. Less ideal if your dog is already anxious about mats or crates — start with just a blanket on the floor instead.

What you'll need

A mat, bed, or towel your dog can call their own, and small treats.

How to do it

  1. Reward any moment your dog lies down calmly on the mat, even briefly.
  2. Gradually increase how long they stay before the reward comes.
  3. Once that's solid, add you stepping a few feet away as part of the exercise.

Why it works

This builds a calm behavior that's physically incompatible with anxious pacing — a dog lying settled on a mat isn't also circling the door.

Safety & precautions

No material safety concerns with this exercise.

When this isn't enough

If your dog can't settle for even a few seconds after several sessions, that's a sign the anxiety needs the fuller desensitization approach, not just this exercise on its own.
